Louis Van Langendonck
An international student intrigued by AI and Data Science.
I am currently doing a Master in Data Science
at the Polytechnical University of Barcelona (UPC) and doing Oceanographic Modeling research at the Institut de Ciències del Mar - CSIC (ICM, Marine Science Institut). I hold a Bachelor degree in Physics, during which I have discovered my love
for rigorous academic research. My goal is to gain experience in different relevant fields and eventually obtain a PhD in a topic I
am fascinated about.
Deep Learning
Deep learning architectures like Transformers and Convolutional- and Recurrent Neural Networks interest me a lot. Moreover,
I have particularly enjoyed its typical use cases: Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Image Processing/Computer Vision (CV).
It is their wide application field that confirm this subject area as my academic focus.
Applied Statistical Modelling
Given my background in Physics, I enjoy understanding and building abstract models of my surrounding. I make use of these skills
throughout my research career. For example, I have been awarded a ICU JAE grant to be able to participate in Marine Science research
in which we work on statistical models and data analysis of phytoplankton populations. This project is lead by
the Institut de Ciències del Mar (ICM, Marine Science Institut), awarded a Center of Excellence by CSIC (the 7th biggest research insitute worldwide).
Bioinformatics
Presently, Data Science applies to almost every discipline. However, I prefer to focus on what can be useful to society and/or nature.
Therefore, I find plenty motivation in my study of Bioinformatics. It combines varied Computer Science techniques with
valuable goals like disease research, environmental understanding, etc.
